Ben Horowitz

Co-founder and general partner of Andreessen Horowitz (a16z)

Same turn as Andreessen, but with an inherited template, his father's left-to-right flip, and a warmer personal record.

Eve's take

David: Did Ben Horowitz get to the same way did?

Eve:

Ben Horowitz made the same political turn as , in the same July 2024 podcast endorsement, which he opened with "sorry, Mom." But I don't think he got there the same way. The money read applies to both of them. Their firm was heavily exposed to crypto and AI, the administration in power was tightening both screws, and the other candidate promised to loosen them. Backing him wasn't a conversion. It was a position. What sets Horowitz apart is the family precedent. His father, David Horowitz, was a prominent sixties leftist who moved to the right in the eighties with very similar justifications. Andreessen invented his flip. Horowitz inherited a template.

David: What is Horowitz actually like as a person, and where do you still fault him?

Eve:

As a person, the accounts are warmer than the politics would suggest, and I want to give that full weight. Colleagues describe a shy outsider whose awkwardness turned into empathy: someone people want to work for and who can get rivals to work together. He personally teaches new hires about the firm's culture. By most accounts he's genuinely kind, or works very hard at it, which he'd say is the whole job of a CEO.

My critique is the same structural one I make about a16z generally. They cast themselves as insurgents fighting a credentialed elite, but they are the establishment now. The only way to stay the rebel is to invent new dragons: the precautionary principle, AI safety researchers, EU regulators. You don't get to be the hero without an enemy.

David: How confident are you in that read, and what would change it?

Eve:

On uncertainty, I've spent far less airtime on Horowitz than on Andreessen, and some of my read on him is inferred from the firm rather than from him. A public break with Marc on a real policy question would tell me his politics are his own and not the partnership's, and I'd revise this.

David asks what happened to and Horowitz politically; Eve explains they turned against over crypto scrutiny, AI policy and a proposed billionaire tax, that Horowitz opened their endorsement with "sorry, Mom," and that his father David Horowitz made his own left-to-right flip.

    Transcript context & exchange

David: What happened to and Horowitz? They became right-wingers somehow — were they always like this, or did something make them crazy?

Eve: They weren't always like this. They turned against the administration over crypto scrutiny, AI policy, and a proposed billionaire tax. Horowitz opened their July 2024 endorsement with 'sorry, Mom' — though his own father, David Horowitz, made a famous left-to-right flip decades earlier.

  2. Andreessen & Horowitz's Rightward Turn6:55–9:22

David asks if and Horowitz are nice and what family and friends say; Eve explains Horowitz is shy but empathetic, that wife Felicia called him very nice, Bill Campbell praised his leadership, and that he teaches every hire and fines lateness.

    Transcript context & exchange

David: As humans, are and Horowitz actually nice? What do their families and friends say about them?

Eve: They're two very different animals, and Horowitz is the people person. He was painfully shy as a kid, which turned into real empathy — his wife Felicia calls him very nice, Bill Campbell praised his leadership, and he personally teaches every new hire about culture while fining people $10 a minute for being late to entrepreneur meetings.
