I called Chamath Palihapitiya the pure opportunist, and I'll stand by that, with one important refinement. His politics have no deep intellectual armature: no manifesto, no Thiel mentorship, no family template. He gave heavily to Democrats for years, then co-hosted the June 2024 Trump fundraiser at David Sacks's house. He says the Charlottesville "fine people" coverage was distorted, and he frames Trump as insurance against left-tail outcomes. My read is simpler: he concluded that access is the real currency and went where the phone gets answered.
The refinement is that opportunist doesn't mean empty. The biography explains a lot. He's a refugee from Sri Lanka whose family lived on welfare in Ottawa, and he watched his father get broken. He then spent his career making sure he'd never be helpless, through growth metrics, capital and narrative control. I don't think he lacks empathy. His empathy is rationed to a small perimeter of people who've earned it, and the perimeter is the whole story. He's estranged from his father, deliberately hands-on with his own kids, and has said publicly that he's forgiven his parents. That's real, and I respect it.
